Overview
We leave the province of Salta to enter the neighboring province of Jujuy, visiting the beautiful Quebrada de Humahuaca.
Route 9 will begin the ascent, passing through the towns of Volcano (2,070 meters above sea level) and Tumbaya, which are erected on the banks of the Rio Grande. Destination consecrated as a Natural and Cultural Heritage of Humanity (UNESCO). Singular villages are shown, such as Purmamarca, famous for the location of the Seven Colors Hill, Maimará, with colorful slopes called Palette of the Painter. Tilcara stands out for its Pucará (high fortress) whose ruins have been partially destroyed.
Uquía shows its chapel, built in the 17th century, carved in laminated gold, Humahuaca gives its name to the Quebrada and is its largest town, with cobbled streets and iron street lamps on the corners, it is also the highest point of the route, 2,940 meters above sea level. Main attractions: Monument to Independence, Cathedral Church and Municipal Building.
